We Tried To Sneak Into The Met Gala
- [Woman on left] Ready?
- [Woman on right] Okay.
A few years ago --
- [Woman on left] We snuck into one of the world's
most exclusive celebrity parties.
- [in unision] And this was that story.
- [Woman on right] (bouncy music) Hi guys I'm (bleep).
- [Woman on left] And I'm (bleep).
Wait, maybe we shouldn't say our names.
- [Woman on right] (laughs) Yeah, maybe not.
- [Woman on left] I remember sitting in my dorm room,
I think I was on my laptop or something.
I was like reading about the Met Gala and I was like,
"Ugh, I want to go. I wish I was famous or knew somebody."
- [Woman on right] So I was like, "Okay, she should
"go to this." I'm-- (laughs) I could be a good psychic.
- [Woman on left] You're my wing woman.
Quick side note, the Met Gala is an event put on by
the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue,
I believe, all the coolest, hottest celebs come
and dress to the nines and there's always like
a really sick theme.
So as soon as I said this to you, you were like,
"Yeah, let's do it." And neither one of us were really
like, "Are you sure?"
- [Woman on right] Yeah, there was not resistance.
- [Woman on left] No.
- [Woman on right] It just happened.
- [Woman on left] And we just started planning.
- [Woman on right] Initially we thought our best bet
would have been to be waitresses.
- [Woman on left] I feel like we got that idea from a movie.
For some reason that was like our go to.
- [Woman on left] But then--
- [Woman on right] It just seemed rational at the time.
- [Woman on left] Yeah.
But then it kind of-- we realized it wouldn't really work.
- [Woman on right] We didn't know if they wore white shirts,
black shirts, ties.
We just did a massive brain storm of all our options.
We thought of paparazzi, we were going to be celeb stylists.
We found out that this major magazine was going to be there
and we thought that maybe we could be a part of it.
- [Woman on left] I remember you sending me people's like
LinkedIn pages and being like, "We're going to be
"this person, this is our job. This is our title."
"This is what we do."
We ended up deciding against using other people's names
because like that's whack and weird.
So we were just going to-- we went as ourselves
but we had like titles and we part of this publication.
You pointed out that a lot of the photographers
and press people were wearing just black, black and white.
So I think that's-- we were just like going to blend in.
I remember I went to a thrift store and I was like sending
you photos of the dresses I was trying on and
then I just found this one.
- [Woman on right] It was amazing.
It was a black long dress.
A little bit revealing at the front. (laughs)
- [Woman on left] (laughs) Just a little.
- [Woman on right] Just a little.
I ended up wearing-- I wanted to look professional
so I ended up wearing a blazer with nothing underneath,
some gold jewelry.
- [Woman on left] Professional. (laughs)
- [Woman on right] Black pants. (laughs)
- [Woman on left] Keep in mind all of this is happening like
48 hours in advance of the actual Met Gala.
(fast tempo music)
- [Woman on right] I guess it was hard to actually find
the information of where to go.
- [Woman on left] Right, they are good at
keeping it, you know, under wraps.
I had class that day and you had mentioned
that we should get there a bit earlier
because we were press.
So we picked a time to go that worked for both of us.
- [Woman on right] I also feel like we were
rushing to get ready, it was like, "Oh my god,
"this is happening, let's put it all on."
- [Woman on left] I think I was like,
"Let's take the bus, or let's take the train."
- [Woman on right] (laughs)
- [Woman on left] And I was like, "How the hell are we--"
- [Woman on right] I was like, "Oh no, Uber Black XL."
- [Woman on left] Yeah, so we
decided to order an Uber Black.
- [Woman on right] We got into the car and we thought
we had to keep it from the Uber driver, and I remember we
were just looking at each other. (laughs) We were so
still in character.
And he was like, "So, where are you guys going?"
And we were like, "The Met Gala."
- [Woman on left] And he was like. "Oh!"
And kind of like asking us questions and more and more
of our characters kind of like disintegrated.
And we just became ourselves.
- [Woman on right] (laughs)
- [Woman on left] And we were like, "Here's what's actually
"going on. We're sneaking into the Met Gala and you're"
"driving us there."
I think he was a Youtuber or something.
- [Woman on right] He apparently had
like one million subscribers.
- [Woman on left] It was fate for us to get him as a driver.
- [Woman on right] We're approaching the Met Gala
and we see some police so I decided to stop the car
and we rolled down the window and I just asked the police,
"Where's the entrance to the Met Gala?"
- [Woman on left] And they were like, "Right this way."
(dramatic music)
Low and behold around the corner
was a line of huge black cars filled with celebrities.
- [Woman on right] And think that's when it really hit me.
I was like, "People are everywhere, people have cameras,"
"people were touching our windows."
- [Woman on left] Mm-hmm, like taking photos of us,
like banging on the glass.
- [Woman on right] Yeah. I remember I was shaking,
I felt a rush of adrenalin.
- [Woman on left] We didn't say a word to each other,
we were just like, "Oh my god. We are about to walk in."
- [Woman on right] It kind of felt like everything
was in slow motion.
- [Woman on left] It was in slow motion.
- [Woman on right] In that moment I didn't feel
like I was pretending to be a celebrity.
I felt like I was a celebrity.
- [Woman on left] I remember pulling up and seeing
the entrance to the Red Carpet and seeing these
huge security guys opening the door.
- [Woman on right] No it was like these hot male models,
whoever opened up my door was cute.
- [Woman on left] (laughs) Lucky!
There was a huge SUV in front of us and they opened
the door and it was Nicki Minaj, so she gets out
with her entourage and I'm like--
I don't even know if I said anything,
but I might nudged you and I was like ...
And we were like miming to each other.
- [Woman on right] (laughs) And then you notice Madonna.
- [Woman on left] Madonna was behind us.
You had cameras so you were kind of trying to
like push them aside because we realized we couldn't
really be press anymore.
Press doesn't just roll up onto the Red Carpet
ready to be photographed.
- [Woman on right] You were squeezing my hand so tightly.
- [Woman on left] There was just this big crowd
of celebrities, we kind of just like pulled over
behind them to try and blend in and like re-group.
- [Woman on right] And it turns out we were
next to Zoe Kravitz, like right next to Zoe Kravitz.
- [Woman on left] And Lorde.
- [Woman on right] Miles Teller and I may have had
a few little eyes together.
I think they locked.
We noticed that there was a small little
kind of make shift table with this girl behind it
with a checklist.
- [Woman on left] We tried to avoid that.
- [Woman on right] And I remember she gave us some eyes.
I was like, "Oh ... is she going to come over here"
"or do we need to check in."
- [Woman on left] But I remember as we were like trying to
sneak our way kind of into the crowd
we realized we were going to be spit out
onto the Red Carpet, it just would have been--
- [Woman on right] Amazing.
- [Woman on left] Amazing, but terrible. (laughs)
So we kind of are panicking and like we can't turn back,
we can't go out there.
What do we do?
So we kind of just are standing there like, non-verbally
communicating with our eyes.
- [Woman on right] Mm-hmm.
- [Woman on left] And freaking out.
- [Woman on right] Eventually a lady came up to us,
I don't know, I just got my (bleep) together.
I really calmed down and said they we were
from that big magazine that we planned.
I didn't say names though.
- [Woman on left] She went back to look and she was like,
"This is not the press entrance."
And I was like, "She's onto us, like there's no way."
I might as well like beat them to it.
So I kind of like scrammed--
- [Woman on right] Yeah, just like (bleep) started running
before I even noticed.
- [Woman on left] I didn't even run.
- [Woman on right] I remember I looked around--
like sprinting.
We try and go to the press entrance.
So pretty much the guy said, "No."
But then we asked to use the bathroom.
We were determined.
On our way to the bathroom
we met this guy, we start speaking.
(slow tempo music)
- [Woman on left] He was somebody's stylist I think.
"Oh, I saw you guys inside, like what happened?"
We were like, "Oh there was a mix up,"
"like we were trying to get there for press,"
"but we got there too late, now we're just trying"
"to figure out how to get in."
We're still in character a little bit.
- [Woman on right] And then we exchange numbers.
- [Woman on left] We went to the bathroom
(bright music)
and realized it wasn't going to work so
we went out we--
- [Woman on right] We lost it.
- [Woman on left] Yeah, we lost hope.
We took an Uber Black on the way there
and then we took a Uber Pool on the way back
'cause we were like, "You know, we're humble girls,"
"on a budget."
And we were both kind of just like freaking out
over what just happened, just like recapping it.
I'm pretty sure either the Uber driver or whoever was
in the car was just like, "Did I just hear you guys"
"correctly--"
- [Woman on right] Yes.
- [Woman on left] "Did you just sneak into the Met Gala?"
We were like, "Yeah! We did!" (laughs)
What we thought was just this guy trying to hit on us,
he was like texting us to come out and come party with him.
And we were like, "Oh, we're tired."
We don't really know this guy's deal or whatever.
It actually turned out that it was
the official after party for the Met Gala.
- [Woman on right] And there were even more celebs
at the after party than the Met Gala.
- [Woman on left] And we didn't go and we should have.
(laughs)
For anyone who says we didn't actually
get into the Met Gala, we did, we were sandwiched in between
Nicki Minaj, Miles Teller.
- [Woman on right] Bella Hadid.
- [Woman on left] Madonna.
- [Woman on right] Victoria Secret models.
- [Woman on left] So ...
- [Woman on right] Good bye.
- [Woman on left] Did you do that? No, I don't think so.
(bouncy music)
